"My Trials of Garret Mountain" September post

"My Trials of Garret Mountain"

As I gathered at the starting line of the race
All of the top runners set a fast pace.
I could tell that this would not be fun
But I would be proud when it's all done.

Halfway through my race, my coach would tell me to relax
However, I could already feel myself starting to slack.
My breathing was more rapid than ever before
Fearing that I would not be able to keep this up anymore.

Though the scenery was quite peaceful
I found the surroundings to be rather deceitful.
The competition was clearly coming to an end
But the last part was a steep hill, one that I must ascend.

My mind was telling me to continue going
But my body had already started slowing.
And the feeling of sprinting up that hill was very painful
Although the instant I finished the race I feeling quite grateful.

  1. Running a cross country race at Garret Mountain always sounds extremely rough. Good job on finishing it though! It takes a lot of mental and physical strength to complete such a long race. I can't even imagine the feeling of seeing a steep hill after twenty minutes of running. Your poem really allowed me to understand what was going through your mind throughout the race. The last stanza was my favorite.

  2. I really liked the words you used to describe the race and the hill -- "peaceful", "deceitful". Very clever! I can't imagine running up a hill at the end of a race but I'm sure you did pretty well with it! Good job on the poem and the race, Chris!
